“A Nondescript Monster”: Fanny Fern in Transatlantic Print Culture

Fanny Fern (real name Sara Payson Willis Parton) was one of the most profitable American columnists and novelists mid-nineteenth century. sustained her celebrity status largely through unauthorised reprints articles in British papers. Consequently, public image for part constructed those reprinted articles, which were usually framed by speculations about private life. This article examines implications limitations Fern’s efforts to stabilise dissemination periodicals using relatively more stable form book. As a celebrity, she had limited control over way publicly represented. woman sphere, particularly vulnerable slander libel. The circulation spurious biography entitled Life Beauties (1855), alongside sanctioned autobiographical novel Ruth Hall, profited from literary brand while simultaneously undermining it.
